How to Read a Tape Measure
Read the whole inch before the endpoint, count the remaining equal spaces, and add the fraction. On a metric tape, combine centimeters and millimeters. If you start away from zero, subtract the starting reading.
To read an inch tape measure, take the whole-inch number immediately before the endpoint, then add the fraction indicated by the smaller marks. With sixteen equal spaces per inch, the seventh space after 2 inches is 2 7/16 inches—not 2.7 inches.
First check the printed units and the smallest division on your own tape. The worked inch examples below use sixteenths unless stated otherwise. The converter checks the arithmetic after you have read the tape; it cannot measure an object for you.

Convert the fraction to a decimal before entering a mixed-number reading. Divide the numerator by the denominator, then add the whole inches: 2 + 7 ÷ 16 = 2.4375. The default calculation returns 6.1913 cm after rounding. Keep the original 2 7/16-inch reading in your notes so the converted decimal does not replace the measurement you actually observed.

1. Identify the scale before counting marks
Find two neighboring whole-inch marks and count the equal spaces between them. Sixteen spaces means each space is 1/16 inch; eight spaces means 1/8 inch. A tape with thirty-two spaces uses 1/32 inch. Count intervals, not every line including the starting line.
On a fractional-inch scale, taller marks usually identify larger fractions: the midpoint is 1/2, the quarter points are 1/4 and 3/4, and shorter marks subdivide those spaces. Check that pattern against the printed numbers rather than deciding from line length alone.

2. Read the whole inch, then add the fraction
Imagine an endpoint between 2 and 3 inches on a sixteenth-inch tape. Start at the 2-inch line, call that position zero, and count seven intervals to the endpoint. The fractional part is 7/16; the complete reading is 2 7/16 inches.

Use nearby landmarks to catch a counting error. Seven sixteenths is one space before the halfway mark; nine sixteenths is one space after it. If your endpoint is visibly left of the midpoint but your fraction is greater than 1/2, count again.

Simplifying a fraction does not change the length: 6/16 and 3/8 are equal. Leaving it as 6/16 while counting can help you keep track of the scale; record 3/8 when you want the shorter conventional form.
3. Read centimeters, millimeters and meters
On a metric scale with one-millimeter divisions, ten small spaces make one centimeter. Read the last whole centimeter, then add the remaining millimeters. Seven centimeters plus four millimeters is 7.4 cm, or 74 mm—not 7.04 cm.

For a measurement beyond a meter, retain the full meter count even if the printed smaller numbers repeat. Use the unit labels and major marks on that tape to establish the starting value; do not treat a repeated “23” as the entire length.

4. Subtract the starting reading when it is not zero
An endpoint is a position on the tape. It equals the measured length only when the other end starts at zero. If you deliberately align the object with a different clear mark, write down both readings and calculate end minus start.

For the third example, rewrite 1/4 as 2/8 before subtracting: 5 5/8 − 2 2/8 = 3 3/8. If you forget the starting reading, the result is too large by exactly that starting amount. This is an arithmetic error, not a conversion error.
5. Check alignment and understand the moving hook
Place the starting reference at the intended edge, keep the tape along the distance being measured, and view the endpoint directly rather than from an angle. Repeat the reading if the edge is unclear. Travers recommends zero alignment and looking directly above the mark to reduce parallax.
A sliding end hook is not automatically a defect. Stanley explains that its hook movement compensates for the hook’s thickness between an outside pull measurement and an inside push measurement. Follow the instructions for your own tape; do not glue a designed sliding hook in place.

That design explanation does not establish that a bent or damaged tape is accurate. If readings disagree, check the starting reference and the physical tool before changing the numbers in the converter. For work requiring a specified tolerance, use a suitable measuring instrument and its instructions.
6. Separate a measurement from its rounded conversion
The international inch equals exactly 2.54 centimeters. Multiplying changes the unit, not the underlying length: 2.4375 × 2.54 = 6.19125 cm exactly for that numerical input. Our converter displays 6.1913 cm because its decimal output is rounded to four places.
Conversion-factor reference:
An exact factor does not make a physical reading infinitely precise. If the object’s edge is between two marks, a long decimal in the calculator cannot tell you where that edge actually lies. Keep the observed unit and the tape’s division alongside the converted result.

Use the decimal when you need a decimal conversion, and the ruler approximation only when you need a nearby sixteenth-inch position. They answer different questions. A +0.5 mm difference may matter for a particular task; the calculator does not decide what tolerance your project permits.

Common questions about reading a tape measure
How do I read a tape measure if the fractions are not printed?
Identify the whole-inch marks and count the equal spaces between two of them. That gives the denominator. Count from the preceding whole inch to the endpoint, then add that fraction to the whole-inch number. Use the midpoint and quarter points as cross-checks.
Is every small line on a tape measure 1/16 inch?
No. The division depends on the scale. Eight equal spaces in one inch indicate eighths; sixteen indicate sixteenths; thirty-two indicate thirty-seconds. Decimal-inch and metric scales use different divisions. Confirm the units and spacing on your tape.
Is 2 7/16 the same as 2.7 inches?
No. 7/16 is 0.4375, so 2 7/16 inches is 2.4375 inches. The notation 2.7 means 2 plus seven tenths. Enter 2.4375 in a decimal-input calculator to represent 2 7/16.
Can I use the pictures as an actual-size ruler?
No. These are enlarged educational illustrations. Screen size, zoom, printing and image scaling change their displayed dimensions. Use a real measuring tool to measure the object, then use the converter to change units.
