Room temperature describes indoor temperature, not one fixed reading. A useful approximate reference is 20°C (68°F); the intended value or range depends on the context.

Convert an indoor temperature reading

Select the unit your thermometer uses before typing the number. A reading of 70°F is about 21.11°C; entering 70 with Celsius selected would instead produce 158°F. The unit is part of the reading, not a display preference you can ignore.

Is room temperature a single number?

Not by itself. In everyday wording, room temperature refers to indoor conditions. In a document, it may be shorthand for a particular reference value or a stated range. Look for that definition before treating the phrase as an exact requirement.

NIST lists 20°C and 68°F as an approximate room-temperature touchstone in its educational temperature table. That is a helpful numerical anchor. It does not mean every room is 20°C or establish a universal thermostat setting.

If a specification gives a temperature and a tolerance, use those numbers. If it only says “room temperature” but your task depends on a precise limit, consult the document’s definition or ask its author. A general reference cannot supply a missing requirement.

Room temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit

For example, 25°C and 77°F describe the same numerical temperature. Converting between them does not tell you whether that reading meets a particular room’s requirements. That second question needs context, not another conversion.

If you need kelvin for a numerical reference, add 273.15 to the Celsius value: 20°C is 293.15 K. NIST’s approximate touchstone table rounds that to 293 K. The calculator on this page switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit, not kelvin.

A reference, a setting and a measurement are different

Before comparing two numbers, ask what each one represents. A target value and a measured value can differ without either being a conversion mistake. The same applies to numbers from different places or times.

To find your actual indoor temperature, use an appropriate thermometer and follow its instructions. Record the displayed unit and where and when you read it. Do not replace that observation with a number returned by a search for “room temperature.”

Keep the meaning when you change units

Convert a temperature reading by multiplying its Celsius value by 1.8 and adding 32. For the reverse direction, subtract 32 from Fahrenheit and divide by 1.8. Retain the original reading if the converted decimal is rounded.

A change from 20°C to 22°C is a rise of 2°C. Its Fahrenheit readings are 68°F and 71.6°F, a rise of 3.6°F. Do not enter the change of 2 into a temperature-reading converter and call the result a temperature difference: the 32-degree offset does not apply to differences.

If you keep a temperature on a desktop dashboard, keep its source and unit visible too. A useful label distinguishes an indoor sensor reading from outdoor weather. A widget without an indoor data source does not become a room thermometer just because it displays degrees.

Questions about room temperature

Is room temperature 20°C or 25°C?

The phrase alone does not specify one exact value. NIST uses 20°C (68°F) as an approximate educational reference. A document can specify a different value, such as 25°C (77°F), for its own context. Check that document rather than treating either number as universal.

What is room temperature in Fahrenheit?

The 20°C reference converts to 68°F. If you mean the temperature in your own room, use the actual measured reading and its unit. A room’s measured temperature need not equal the reference.

Does “ambient temperature” always mean room temperature?

Ambient describes the surrounding environment. That environment may be a room, an outdoor location or the surroundings of equipment. Check the location and source before treating an ambient reading as indoor room temperature.

Can this page measure my room temperature?

No. It converts a number you enter between Celsius and Fahrenheit. It does not read an indoor temperature sensor or infer room temperature from your location or computer.

Use 20°C (68°F) as a reference, a thermometer for an observation, and the applicable specification for a requirement. Those are three different jobs; converting the unit does not make them interchangeable.
