How Many Weeks Are in a Month?

A week is a group of seven days. Divide the month’s number of days by seven: the whole-number part gives full weeks, and the remainder gives extra days. For 31 days, 31 = (4 × 7) + 3, so the exact answer is four weeks and three days.

“Four full weeks” does not mean the leftover dates disappear. Those one, two or three days still count when you schedule an event or compare two dates. Decimal answers such as 4.29 weeks are rounded ways of expressing the same interval; weeks plus remaining days avoids that rounding.

This table uses Gregorian calendar months. February has two possible lengths; the other months keep the same number of days in both common and leap years.

The U.S. Naval Observatory describes the Gregorian leap-year rule as divisible by four, except century years must also be divisible by 400. February 2024 had 29 days; February 2026 has 28. The year 2000 was a leap year, while 1900 was not. This explains February’s extra day without changing the length of a week.

Four weeks always advances a date by 28 days. A calendar month follows the calendar instead. Starting on March 1, 2026, four weeks later is March 29, while one calendar month later is April 1—a difference of three days.

Read a schedule’s unit literally. “Every four weeks” is a 28-day interval; “monthly” refers to calendar months. If a monthly schedule starts on the 29th, 30th or 31st, check how that schedule handles a later month without that date. Do not replace an unspecified month-end rule with an assumed four-week interval.

Use the first day of the month as the start and the first day of the next month as the end. Leave “Include end date” off. This counts every date in the first month once, without also counting the next month’s first date.

Alternatively, enter the first and last dates of the same month and enable “Include end date.” For March 1–31, that setting counts 31 dates. Leaving it off counts 30 days between those two dates. Both answers follow a rule; choosing the wrong rule for your question causes the off-by-one error.

About 4.35 weeks is a useful long-run Gregorian average, not an exact duration for a particular month. The 400-year leap-year cycle contains 146,097 days across 4,800 months. Dividing 146,097 by 4,800 and then by 7 gives 4.348125 weeks per month.

The familiar 4.33 approximation comes from 52 weeks ÷ 12 months. But 52 weeks is only 364 days: an ordinary year has one more day and a leap year has two more. That shortcut is not an exact calendar conversion. For a real deadline or date range, select dates and count them instead of multiplying by an average.

Calendar rows align dates under weekday headings. A month can occupy parts of five or six rows without containing five or six complete seven-day weeks. The first and last rows may each contain only a few dates from that month.

March 2026 starts on a Sunday and has 31 days. It occupies five rows on a Sunday-first calendar, but six on a Monday-first calendar. Its duration is unchanged: four weeks and three days. Likewise, a month can contain five occurrences of a particular weekday without containing 35 days.
