Age Calculator: Years, Months and Days

Choose a date of birth and a reference date to calculate completed calendar years, months and remaining days. The component also shows the next birthday under its stated month-end convention. It is a calendar calculation for personal use, not a legal age or eligibility determination.

Use the Calculator

Enter the actual birth date rather than just a birth year. Someone born in December has not necessarily reached the same completed age as someone born in January of the same year. The component uses a clearly visible sample birthday initially; replace it before treating the result as your own.

Choose the reference date. It starts with the server’s UTC calendar date and remains an editable selected date. If today in your location is different near midnight, change the field. You can also choose a past or future reference to answer a specific planning question, provided it is not before the birth date.

Read years, months and days as a calendar decomposition. The tool advances by complete month anniversaries, then counts the remaining dates. Twelve complete months form a complete year. This is not total days divided by 365, and the month remainder is not calculated by assuming every month has thirty days.

Check the next birthday and days until it. On a birthday, the next occurrence can be the current reference date with zero days remaining. A February 29 birth uses February 28 in a non-leap year under this tool’s clamping convention. Other administrative systems may use different conventions.

How the Calculation Works

To measure completed months, first compare the month numbers and years of the two dates. Build the corresponding anniversary from the original birth date. If that anniversary is later than the reference, remove one month. If the target month lacks the original day number, use its final date. The remaining days are the interval from this month anniversary to the reference. This makes the rule reproducible for birthdays near the end of a month without pretending there is one universal legal convention.

A Practical Walkthrough: Compare the Inputs and Counting Rules Before Saving the Result

Take a birthday of September 6, 2000 and a reference date of September 5, 2026. The twenty-sixth birthday has not been reached, so subtracting 2000 from 2026 would overstate completed years. Move the reference date forward one day and the anniversary is reached. The next-birthday line then refers to that same day with zero days remaining; it does not silently skip a birthday that is happening now. This is a useful boundary check before entering personal dates. A February 29 birthday needs another explicit convention. This tool uses February 28 as the anniversary in a non-leap year, following its general month-end clamping rule. Other administrative or legal contexts may use a different rule, and the calculator does not decide that policy. Use this page for personal date arithmetic and milestone planning, not as an authoritative eligibility determination. Birth dates stay in the local calculation, but a screenshot or copied note can still expose personal information if you share it. Keep only the date detail needed for your task, and do not include somebody else’s full birthday in a public troubleshooting image.

Worked Reference Examples

Fixed examples for checking the documented calculation convention.
Input Counting rule Result
2000-01-31 → 2026-01-30 Before the January anniversary 25 y 11 m 30 d
2000-01-31 → 2026-01-31 Birthday 26 y 0 m 0 d
2024-02-29 → 2025-02-28 Clamped anniversary 1 y 0 m 0 d
2000-05-15 → 2026-09-06 Completed anniversaries 26 y 3 m 22 d

Use these examples to verify the mode before entering your own values. Change one setting at a time so you can identify why the result changes. The examples are fixed demonstrations; they are not automatically updated personal data or recommended dates for your own task.

Important Boundaries

A birth date is personal information. This calculation runs locally and does not require registration. Avoid including the date of birth in a public screenshot or shared note when the age alone is sufficient.

A calendar age does not establish legal rights, school placement, insurance treatment or any other eligibility rule. Those contexts can depend on location, cutoff times and explicit administrative conventions. Consult the relevant official source instead of assuming this result settles the question.

The next-birthday count is measured in calendar dates, not remaining hours until a birth time. If you want a casual desktop birthday reminder, save the chosen date and your preferred February 29 convention. The Kepo download link does not automatically import either value.

Save a Result You Can Recheck

Keep the original inputs with the result. A bare number such as five, thirty or one hundred does not tell a later reader whether it represents dates, weekdays, minutes or complete anniversaries. The copy action records the selected calculation context, and it confirms success only after the browser accepts the clipboard operation.

Calculation fields stay on this device. Closing or refreshing the page is not a promise of persistent storage, and no account is needed to use the tool. If an input is incomplete or invalid, the component hides the previous numerical result and explains what needs changing. Do not use an old screenshot as a result for new inputs.

Kepo offers Mac desktop widgets for repeated checks and small personal workflows. You can explore those capabilities through the download page, but this calculator does not automatically transfer its inputs, save a reminder or generate a configured widget. Preserve the result yourself before moving to a desktop workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not divide total days by 365?

Leap years and anniversary dates affect completed calendar age. Dividing by 365 gives a rough duration, not this years-months-days decomposition.

How is a February 29 birthday handled?

The tool uses February 28 in a non-leap year. This is a disclosed calculation convention, not a legal rule.

Can I calculate age on another date?

Yes. Change the reference date to a valid date on or after the birth date.

A useful result includes the inputs, unit and counting convention. Keep all three when you save or share it.
