Enter two valid dates with the end on or after the start. The starting day of the month is part of the calculation, not an optional detail. January 1 and January 31 can produce different decompositions even when their end dates fall in the same later month.

Read the complete-month number first. The tool finds the latest monthly anniversary that does not pass the end date. It always constructs the anniversary from the original start, so an earlier short month does not permanently change the anchor day for later months.

Read the remaining days from that anniversary to the end. January 31 to March 1, 2026 reaches a clamped February 28 anniversary and then adds one day. The result is one month and one day under the documented rule, rather than thirty days divided by an average month length.

Check whether this convention matches the system you are comparing against. Spreadsheets, billing systems and subscription rules can define missing anniversary days differently. When results disagree, compare the month-end convention and endpoint semantics before deciding that either system has an arithmetic error.

How the Calculation Works

The initial month difference comes from year and month numbers. The calculator adds that many months to the original starting date and clamps a missing day to month-end. If the anniversary would be after the end, one month is removed. The gap after the resulting anniversary is reported as remaining days. This produces an explicit calendar decomposition; it is not a financial day-count convention or a statement that every billing month has equal length.

Use January 31, 2026 as a start and compare three end dates: February 28, March 1 and March 31. Under the stated convention, February 28 is the first clamped month anniversary, so the first interval is one month. March 1 adds one day after that anniversary. March 31 reaches the second month anniversary, because the calculation returns to the original day number of 31 when March supports it. It does not carry February’s shortened day forward and treat March 28 as the second anniversary. This original-anchor behavior is important when checking recurring plans. Repeatedly adding one clamped month to the previous result can produce a different series from adding a chosen number of months to the original date. Neither series should be used without specifying its rule. This calculator uses the original anchor. If you compare its output with a spreadsheet or subscription dashboard, record that distinction before investigating a difference. Also keep complete calendar months separate from a decimal fraction: one month and one day does not have a unique decimal-month value until a denominator for that remaining day has been defined.

Month addition is not generally interchangeable with repeated day addition. A plan for thirty days can end on a different date than a plan for one calendar month. Use the unit stated in the original task rather than whichever number looks simpler.

A recurring reminder can also have a policy for short months: clamp, skip or move to the following month. The calculation shown here uses clamping only. Save that convention alongside a desktop reminder instead of assuming all calendar applications use the same behavior.
